Press release from the Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs, 14 May 2008

Minister Bendtsen: Social responsibility pays off

Minister for Economic and Business Affairs Bendt Bendtsen now presents the action plan for companies’ and investors’ social responsibility

Denmark’s corporate sector must show that financial growth can go hand in hand with considerations for people and the environment. This is why the Government today introduces a thirty-item action plan for corporate social responsibility.

”In a globalised, modern world we need old-fashioned values like responsibility and consideration,” says Minister for Economic and Business Affairs, Bendt Bendtsen.

”Many Danish companies are skilled in combining good business and responsibility. By introducing this action plan, we will help companies become even better – and not least more accomplished in spreading the message to customers, business partners and consumers, explains Mr Bendtsen.

The action plan has four key action areas:

  • Propagating business-driven social responsibility. This is not only good for the company’s conscience but also for its revenue.
  • Promoting social responsibility through state activities.
  • Strengthening corporate climate responsibility.
  • Marketing Denmark for responsible growth.

A Social Responsibility Council will be set up along with a new Internet portal, www.samfundsansvar.dk , where companies can find help and inspiration.

”In a globalised world, Denmark cannot compete on prices alone. Our products must have extra value – in all aspects from design to the environment and responsibility. The action plan should be considered with that fact in mind – a plan that will propel us to the front in terms of social responsibility, explains Mr Bendtsen.

One of the initiatives calls for Denmark’s 1,000 largest companies to take the lead and report annually on their social responsibility work in the management's review of the annual reports that are already prepared today.

“It is completely up to the individual company whether it wants to set up a policy for the area. The Government will not introduce legislation specifying how companies must work with corporate social responsibility in detail. But we want the largest companies to explain what they are doing,” states Mr. Bendtsen.
